Winter Newsletter 2018

Welcome to the first Canada Club newsletter of 2018, which covers new appointments, membership news and the announcement of a special event in June 2018…

From the Committee

Greetings from the Committee of the Canada Club.

As we embark on our Club’s 208th year, we are delighted to announce three new appointments.

New Chair

We are delighted to announce Jennifer Maxwell as the 42nd Chair of the Canada Club. Jennifer is from Ottawa and has lived in London for 11 years. She is a partner of the Canadian law firm Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. She brings huge enthusiasm for the Canada Club as well as extensive experience organizing events and committees in connection with her legal practice and her interests in the arts.

The Committee also thanks Lisa Tomas for serving as our 41st Chair.  Lisa produced such memorable Canada Club dinners as the Bank of England Governor Mark Carney at the Guildhall, the Royal Canadian Geographic President John Geiger at the Travellers Club, Just for Laughs CEO Adam Blanshay at the Groucho Club and the recent event in partnership with the National Ballet of Canada and the Royal Ballet at the Printworks.

New Committee Member

We are pleased to announce that Hugh Sanderson has joined the Canada Club Committee. Hugh is from Calgary and is Executive Managing Director of GMP First Energy. He is a longtime and active Canada Club Member. We are thrilled that he has agreed to become even more involved by joining us in running the Club.

New Head of Operations

At the beginning of this year, the Club engaged Rei Yamazaki to act as our Head of Operations.  Rei, a Harvard MBA, is from Japan, married to a Canadian, and has lived in London for nine years. Rei will be working closely with Jennifer and the Committee to modernise our administrative systems, coordinate our events, and liaise with Members.

We look forward to seeing you all soon.

From the Chair

Hello Canada Club Members,

I am honored to have been selected to act as the Chair of the Canada Club.  During my tenure I aim to continue the Canada Club’s long-standing tradition of providing a gathering place in London for Canadians and those interested in Canada.

Dinner with Margaret Atwood, 4 June 2018, ZSL London Zoo

I am looking forward to hosting my first Canada Club dinner as Chair. And what a way to start – with Margaret Atwood!

Margaret Atwood needs no introduction as an author, particularly to the generations of Canadians who have enjoyed and been challenged by her writing. Recently, her work has gained even greater global prominence through the award-winning serialisations of The Handmaid’s Tale and Alias Grace. Now, the underlying themes of her writing are inspiring political movements and activists all over the world.

Perhaps less known is Margaret’s personal activism for environmental causes, including conservation. Margaret is an avid birdwatcher and is Founder Patron of Birdlife International’s Rare Bird Club. Her interest in the natural world makes ZSL London Zoo, with its significant conservation programmes, the perfect location for our event.

At our dinner, Margaret will speak about how her work has been inspired and influenced by her many passions, including human rights, artistic rights and conservation. More details on the dinner can be found below.

2018 Membership Drive

Behind the scenes, your Canada Club team is working to update administrative systems and planning future events. Our key focus now is the Club’s 2018 membership drive.

Please note that historic standing orders are no longer active due to a change in our banking institution. As a result, we would be grateful if all Members take a few minutes to renew their membership through our website at canadaclub.co.uk/shop.  For more information on how to renew, please see below.

Thank you for your continued support.

Best regards,

Jennifer Maxwell, Chair
